Excerpt from Pit River Investigation, 1933

Prior to settlement by whites, the upper Pit River area was inhabited by the Pits and Modocs, warlike tribes of Indians, who were responsible for many raids and massacres of emigrants passing through the territory on their way to Oregon or the California gold fields. NO general movement toward settlement of the region was made until after the close of the Modoc Indian \vars in 1873.
